Pay Per Click Advertising
Pay-per-click (PPC) is big online business. In fact , it’s the primary way Google makes money-almost all of its income, 98 per-cent, comes from PPC-and is very important towards Yahoo! as well. Pay Per Click has taken mass-media advertising to smaller businesses. Businesses that would never have used money on radio, TELEVISION, or newspapers, are now paying it on PPC... and occasionally making a profit!

Sometimes? Effectively, the fact is that PPC will not work for everyone. You may need the right combination of gross earnings per sale, Pay Per Click value, and website conversion rate. If you don’t have the right combination-and many businesses simply don’t-PPC will forfeit you money. Get anything lined up just right, though, in addition to PPC can provide a regular, estimated flow of profitable internet business to your web site.

What Is PAY PER CLICK?

Pay Per Click refers to an advertising procedure in which advertisers pay each and every time someone clicks their advertisement. More specifically, though, these days this refers to ads displayed with search-engine results pages.

You can see a good example in Google Results Page. On top of the search results are a couple of small ads-shown on a lighting azure background in this instance. In the top-right corner, notice the words Sponsored Links. More ads show up down the side of the page-again with the words Sponsored Links, but this time above the ads.

Whenever someone clicks one of these links, the company that placed the particular ad is charged. Just how much? Somewhere from Five cents (on Google) or TEN cents (on Yahoo! ) to many dollars! Some PAY PER CLICK ads cost as much as 50 DOLLARS per click, occasionally even more!

Since large PPC systems typically “feed” a variety of sites, when one buys ads through a system for example Google or Yahoo! Search engine marketing Solutions, your ads could end up on many different search sites. But you may also include your ads distributed in a different place, like on the pages associated with thousands of different web sites, thanks to the Google AdSense distribution program.

PPC advertising has a variety of advantages:

  • It’s extremely quick. You can start getting results through the search engines in a day or two (in theory, a few hours, but in many instances it takes a little longer to acquire everything sorted out).
  • It’s reliable. Using PAY-PER-CLICK to get traffic to your site is incredibly reliable. You can generate a lot of targeted traffic, and always appear for ideal searches in the major search engines like google... if you’re willing to pay enough.
  • It’s easy to measure. You will see just how much traffic you’re receiving, and even figure out how much of the targeted traffic turns into business

Walking & Cycling
A new study shows that the benefits of walking and cycling outweigh the negative effects on health of air pollution, even in places with high levels of air pollution such as New Delhi - one of the most polluted cities in the world.

This new evidence strengthens the case for supporting cycling even in polluted cities, an effort that in turn can help reduce vehicle emissions, researchers said. 'Our model indicates that in London health benefits of active travel always outweigh the risk from pollution,' said Marko Tainio from University of Cambridge in the UK. 'Even in Delhi, one of the most polluted cities in the world – with pollution levels ten times those in London - people would need to cycle over five hours per week before the pollution risks outweigh the health benefits,' said Tainio.

Regular physical activity reduces the risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and several cancers. One way for people to increase their levels of physical activity is through 'active travel' - for example walking and cycling; however, concern has been raised about the potential risk due to air pollution while walking and cycling in urban environments, researchers said.

Air pollution is one of the leading environmental risk factors for people's health. One of the main sources of air pollution in cities is transport and a shift from cars, motorbikes and buses to active travel would help to reduce emissions, researchers said. However, people who walk or cycle in such environments will inhale more pollution, which could be detrimental to their health.

Researchers from CEDAR, a partnership between the Universities of Cambridge and East Anglia, and the Medical Research Council used computer simulations to compare the risks and benefits for different levels of intensity and duration of active travel and of air pollution in different locations around the world, using information from international epidemiological studies and meta-analyses.
The study is the first to model the risks and benefits of walking and cycling across a range of air pollution concentrations around the world, researchers said. Using this data, they calculated that in practical terms, air pollution risks will not negate the health benefits of active travel in the vast majority of urban areas worldwide.

Only 1 per cent of cities in the World Health Organisation's Ambient Air Pollution Database had pollution levels high enough that the risks of air pollution could start to overcome the benefits of physical activity after half an hour of cycling every day, researchers said. The findings were published in the journal Preventive Medicine.

adsense
The hardest part of getting started with Adsense is getting Google to approve your website. In fact, for many, it is easier to get a $100,000 bank loan than it is to get a free Google Adsense account. The key is to be prepared before you apply.

You can’t start using Google Adsense on your pages until you are approved. This means that you must prepare to open an account, before you apply for an account.

The very first thing you must do is read Google’s Terms of Service (TOS). If your site doesn’t fall within the guidelines that Google sets out, it will be denied. Furthermore, even after you are approved and you start running Google ads on your site, if you break the TOS, you will be removed, and possibly banned, from the program.

Specifically, what you are looking for is the Program policies, which can be found at http://www.google.com/adsense. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and click on then Program Policies link. The first thing to note is that Google will not accept any site that is not complete.

This means that you can’t have any pages that are ‘under construction.’ All of the pages must be complete, and all of the links must be working. Make sure that all of your graphics are also appearing correctly, because even a broken graphic can prevent you from getting approved.

Google also has a set of Quality Guidelines that must be adhered to before you can be approved. These guidelines, along with the program policies, will tell you exactly what you can and can’t have on your site, and what is expected of you and your site in terms of meeting the qualifications for a Google Adsense account. You can find these guidelines at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer =35769.

One mistake that so many would-be Adsense publishers make is not reading the TOS, the Program Policies, and the Webmaster Guidelines. Google lays these out in very specific terms, so there is no doubt as to the rules. They are also very serious about these rules.

Often, people skip this step in the preparation – reading the rules – work hard to build a site, only to be disapproved by Google, or to be approved, but then banned from the program later.

Don’t let this happen to you. These are rules that you must not only follow in order to get approved, but must continue to follow in order to stay in the program. You don’t want to spend days and weeks putting together sites, only to get kicked out of the program later. Google is very serious about this.

Once you’ve read the rules, and made sure you understand them, the next part of the preparation is doing research to find out which topics will be the most profitable for you, and getting the site built. We will cover these topics in more depth in a later article, but for now, you just need one website that will be approved by Google.

Remember that you only have to get approved for one site in order to get in the program, and from there on, you can publish as many sites as you want, on a wide variety of topics, and use Google Adsense on them, from the one account that you have been approved for.

While many just put up a website that will meet Google’s standards, without doing any research in order to get approved, you could also take a little longer, and go ahead and build a site that you can use to target the high paying keywords.

This is totally up to you, and it really doesn’t matter much which direction you go, as long as the site will get you approved for a Google Adsense account.

I usually recommend creating and building a blogger.com blog, and apply using that one. You may not know this, but Google owns Blogger...

coffee
If you are a coffee lover, here is another reason to go for an extra cup. According to health experts, two-three cups of black, caffeinated coffee without sugar and a little bit or no milk can reduce the risk of liver disease - including liver cancer.

People who consume more than two cups of coffee per day with pre-existing liver disease have shown lower incidence of fibrosis and cirrhosis, lower Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) rates - the most common type of liver cancer -- as well as decreased mortality.

"Coffee is a rich source of antioxidants and the protective effects of coffee have been proposed in a variety of conditions ranging from heart disease to stroke to Type 2 diabetes as well as Parkinson's disease."

The incidence of advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis is lower among coffee drinkers. The risk of liver cancer is also lower in coffee drinkers compared to non-coffee consuming population.

"Coffee should be taken without sugar. If sugar is added, it decreases the effects of caffeine. Also, go for less milk or preferably without milk."

Various components of coffee have a favourable effect on liver, including caffeine, coffee oils kahweol, cafestol and antioxidant substances from coffee beans.

"Epidemiological studies strongly suggest that drinking about three cups of coffee every day will reduce the risk or severity of liver damage caused by a variety of etiological agents."

"Coffee is safe for people with liver diseases but one has to remember that moderation is the key. It is also advisable to consult your physician."

A group of Italian researchers found last month that five-six cups of coffee daily can provide protective effect against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Daily dose of coffee can check non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by reducing permeability of the gut, the team reported after conducting the research on mice.

"Previous studies have confirmed how coffee can reverse the damage of NAFLD but this is the first to demonstrate that it can influence the permeability of the intestine," said Vincenzo Lembo from the University of Napoli, Italy.

In alcohol-induced liver injury, caffeine has been shown to be protective against liver fibrosis.

The benefits associated with drinking dark black coffee also helps in preventing diabetes and thus lowering the risk of liver disease.

"It should be noted that other caffeinated drinks do not provide similar protection against liver disease. The component -- polyphenols (CGA) -- may be responsible for the positive metabolic effects of coffee."

"Drinking coffee lessens the risk of developing liver disease but does not eliminate the possible risk factors. So, the risks of development of liver disease still are there but severity may be less."

A word of caution, though.

Children and young people in pediatric age group should avoid the more intake of coffee as it increases the side effects of caffeine in the form of anxiety, restlessness, headache and insomnia.

Pp to 400 mg of caffeine daily can be considered safe for such age group.

tax breaks
The last few years, salaried individuals have not got any major relief from the government in the form of tax breaks. Those in the higher tax bracket end-up paying a lot of taxes to the exchequer.
However, there are ways in which you can save tax through smartly structuring your salary. This will also increase your take home pay.

Here are 7 ways in which you can reduce tax from salary and increase take home pay.

1) Make sure your salary has LTA component

It is important to study the break-up of your salary before you start work. Negotiation of salary is important, but, equally important is the break-up. If it does not include tax free allowances, you will end-up paying more tax.

You can get Leave Travel Allowance for travelling expenditure in India. It is exempt two times in a block of four years. This exemption can be claimed once in period of two years

2) Food Coupons

Check with your company if they offer meal coupons like Sodexho and Ticket Restaurant. These are tax exempted up to Rs 50 per meal.

So, it can go to Rs 100 per day and assuming you work for 25 days, you can get a tax exemption of Rs 2500 per month.

So, if you are in the 20 per cent tax bracket you can save up to Rs 6000 per year and Rs 10,000 per year in the 30 per cent tax bracket.

3) Medical Allowance

Your salary income should include medical allowance, which gives you tax benefit of Rs 15000 per year. However, you need to produce physical copies of the original bills.

4) Paying rent can give you huge tax break

Depending on the city you are in, you can get a big tax break if you are paying rent. You need to produce rental receipts and also the PAN card of your landlord. For metropolitan cities the tax break is higher.

5) Opt for higher PF contribution

Opt for higher amount of PF contribution, as you can get tax benefits Under Sec80C of the Income Tax Act.

6) Travel Allowance

Make sure that your salary has a component of travel allowance. This is exempt by Rs 1600 per month. If it is lower, ask the company to keep it at Rs 1600 to get full tax benefits. In any case travel expenses these days is almost always above Rs 1600.

7) Submit tax declaration on time

Companies normally ask for tax declaration. Make sure that this is submitted on time or else they would start cutting TDS from salary.

There can be a couple of dozen free or freemium email services, although for most people, it boils down to Google’s Gmail or Microsoft’s Outlook.com.

best free email service

Of course, some people want particular features, and may be willing to pay for them. Those can include privacy, encryption, more storage space, the ability to use your own domain name, support for the IMAP and Microsoft EAS (Exchange ActiveSync) email protocols, add-on services such as instant messaging and calendars, and companion apps for smartphones and tablets. Some people would not want Google scanning their emails for its targeted advertising. Such considerations provide opportunities for smaller services which include FastMail and ProtonMail - the latter offers extra security and end-to-end encryption.

Think very carefully about your priorities before you come to a decision. Changing email addresses involves some work and can be a chore for your contacts.

Registering your own domain and using that for your email address: it makes it possible for you to switch email providers while retaining the same myemail@mysite.com email address. Unfortunately, both Gmail and Outlook.com have stopped offering that service for free, though you may find it elsewhere. (Try GMX Mail, Rackspace or Runbox, for example.) It’s more common with paid-for/business accounts, including Gmail and Zoho Mail.

Importing your emails and contacts One of the most useful features of a new mail service is the ability to import all the emails and contacts from your old one. Both Gmail and Outlook.com seem to do this pretty well, though it can take a few days or even weeks to collect everything. In Gmail, click the cogwheel and select Settings, go to the tab that says “Accounts and import” and click on “Import mail and contacts”. In Outlook.com, click the cogwheel and select “Connected accounts” (or if not there, “Options”). Next, under “Add a connected account”, select “Other email accounts”. Outlook.com lets you import your old email straight into your new inbox or into a new folder, with subfolders like your old account. Gmail can’t do folders.

Google provides 15GB, shared with Gdrive, which should be enough. (Having used Gmail since it opened, I’ve had to delete emails with large attachments to stay under the limit.) Outlook.com provides infinite space, but the actual space expands slowly from 5GB, so a flurry of large emails can lead to “mailbox full” messages.

best free email service

Both Gmail and Outlook.com allow mail forwarding, which means you can have all incoming emails automatically forwarded to another email address.

After using both systems for more than a decade, Gmail faster, more powerful, and easier to use, so that’s what It is recommended. Generally, they are not too far apart on features, but Gmail is more configurable. Either way, the latest version of Outlook.com has “infinite pages”, and the search/move operation is a nightmare.

Microsoft is pushing its free upgrade at Windows 7 users and Tom wonders what the benefits are. The answer includes opt-out information for refuseniks.

upgrade from Windows 7 to 10

Eight months after launch, Windows 10 is running on 270m devices and it’s not going away, Some large organisations have already started to move. By contrast, we know that Windows 7 is going away: Microsoft will stop supporting it in 2020.

Of course, Microsoft – like Apple and Google – would like everyone to use the latest version of its operating system. It has therefore encouraged early adoption by offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 – again, like Apple and Google, except that Microsoft’s upgrade offer is only available for a year.
Either way, once you have installed Windows 10, it will be updated free for the life of your device. There will (probably) never be a Windows 11, because Microsoft is now producing two small updates each year instead of one big update every three years.

Whether it’s worth upgrading now depends on what sort of PC you have, but the more mobile, the better. If you have an old desktop PC with no touchscreen, no camera and no microphone, there are fewer benefits. (The touchscreen isn’t essential, it’s just nice to have.) If you have a modern Windows laptop or 2-in-1 with UEFI firmware, the upgrade is more attractive.

I say “the more mobile, the better” because Windows 10 is a mobile operating system. I know this upsets people who think their PCs should work just like they did in a previous century, but the whole technology world is changing and Windows is changing along with it.

Ecosystem wars

The other thing to bear in mind is that we are in an ecosystem war that Microsoft wants to win. The main alternative ecosystems are run by Apple and Google. However, Apple’s approach is mostly “Apple only” (apart from iTunes), while Google’s is mostly “cloud only” (apart from Chrome). Both support only a very limited range of devices.

By contrast, Microsoft is building an ecosystem that supports both on-premise and cloud operation, and that runs across all three ecosystems: it has dozens of apps for Android and Apple’s iOS, and is increasing its support for Linux in Windows 10 and Azure. Windows runs on everything from USB sticks, games consoles and smartphones to giant server farms, and there’s an internet of things version for the Raspberry Pi and other devices.

If you only use one old desktop PC, you will get limited benefits from the Windows ecosystem. If you have a lot of different types of device, you will get more benefits from Windows 10 and all the related apps and cloud-based services such as Outlook.com and Office 365.

upgrade from Windows 7 to 10

From 7 to 10

Depending on your hardware, a straight upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 may offer some benefits. These start with smoother and sometimes faster operations, more economical use of memory and disk space, increased security (SmartScreen, Windows Defender, encryption), and the integration of OneDrive cloud storage.

File Explorer is a better file manager, and DirectX 12 promises better gaming. Task View makes it easier to access running programs. Virtual desktops, which were easily added, are now built in. The system refresh and reset options make it simpler to maintain your PC.

Windows 10 also includes the new Edge browser, though IE11 is still there, hidden away. You can also search the internet from your desktop.

Further, Windows 10 provides better built-in support for newer types of hardware including secure boot capabilities with UEFI, USB 3.0, Bluetooth adapters, high-definition screens (ie better scaling), and solid state drives (eg NVMe). With UEFI, Windows 10 machines boot up and resume from sleep dramatically faster than Windows 7. Almost instant-on was needed for smartphone and tablet use, of course, but it still benefits PC users. Many Windows 10 features aren’t available on Windows 7. The most obvious are Cortana, an AI-based personal assistant, notifications and Windows Store apps. All three migrated from the smartphone world. There’s also Windows Hello, where your PC logs you on when it sees your face. However, that requires a camera compatible with Intel’s RealSense.

Windows Store apps – first introduced with Windows 8 – are written to a new application programming interface called Windows RunTime, not the traditional Win32 API. Windows Store apps are remotely installed and updated (like Android and iOS apps), run in secure sandboxes and can be cleanly uninstalled. “Universal” apps run on PCs, Windows smartphones and the Xbox One games console.

Windows 10 includes RunTime apps for Mail, Photos, Maps, Calendar, Groove Music and so on. You can download more from the 700,000 apps in the Windows Store. The quality is variable but they include free Microsoft Office apps, Adobe Photoshop Express, AutoDesk Pixlr, Code Writer, Dropbox, Flipboard, Fresh Paint, Line, Netflix, Notepad++, OneNote, Shazam, SkyScanner, TeamViewer Touch, Trello, TuneIn Radio, Viber and Wunderlist.

There’s one faction of tech fans that claims all smartphone and tablet apps are crap and there’s no substitute for real software, while another faction reckons that smartphone and tablet apps can do everything so the whole PC industry is dead. Both are wrong but why argue? In principle, Windows 10 can offer the best of both worlds.

upgrade from Windows 7 to 10

The case against

You asked about the benefits of upgrading to Windows 10 and I’ve listed some immediate and some strategic (ecosystem) benefits. Even so, I don’t expect everybody to upgrade every PC. For example, my work desktop has no microphone, no camera, no touchscreen, no UEFI, it’s never turned off and it’s mainly used for Microsoft Office, photo processing and web browsing. It might stay on Windows 7 forever. But my touchscreen tablets and laptops get upgraded as soon as possible.

Only you can decide whether you want to jump in now or wait until you buy a new PC, which will have been designed to run Windows 10, and should make much better use of its new features.
Also, Windows 10 has improved a lot since its launch and while you wait, it should keep getting better. If you’re a “late adopter” or otherwise averse to change, you can stick with Windows 7 until January 2020. It’s your decision.

However, if that’s what you want, it’s a good idea to follow Microsoft’s opt-out instructions. This involves editing the registry, but Steve Gibson’s Never 10 will do the job without installing any software. You can delete it after using it.

In case a visitor clicks on an advertising campaign, the webmaster serving the ad earns a percentage of the money which the advertiser is paying the search engine intended for the click. The search engine is the one dealing with all the tracking and payments, delivering a simple way for webmasters to display content-sensitive and targeted ads with no need the hassle to solicit advertisers, collect funds, monitor the clicks and statistics which often could be a time-consuming process in itself.

It appears that there is in no way a shortage of advertisers within the program from which in turn the search engine pulls the Adsense ads. Likewise webmasters are a smaller amount bothered by the lack of information search engines are offering and are more targeted in making cash right from these search engines.

Google Adsense
The primary reason why Adsense is essential for content sites simply because it already has come a extended way in being familiar with the needs of publishers and webmasters. Along with its constant progression is the appearance of a lot more enhanced system that permits full ad customization. Webmasters are offered the possibility to choose from a lot of different kinds of text ad formats to significantly better complement their website and suit their webpage layout. The various formatting enables the website owners the possibility of much more click through right from visitors who may or may not be aware of what exactly they are clicking on. Additionally, it can appeal to the people visiting thus make them get that next step of looking up what it is all about. By doing this the folks behind the Adsense could possibly get their content read and making profit in the method.

The next reason is the ability of the Adsense publishers to track not merely precisely how their sites are moving on but additionally the earnings dependent on the webmaster-defined channels. The recent enhancements in the search engines offers webmasters the capabilities to keep track of how their ads are accomplishing using customizable reports which has the potential to depth page impressions, clicks and click-through rates. Webmasters and publishers will be able to at this time track certain ad formats, colors and pages inside of a website. Trends are also very easily spotted. Along with the real-time reporting at hand, the effectiveness of the modifications made will likely be assessed quickly. There might possibly be time to sort out the contents which people are making the most clicks on. The ever-changing demands can be met while producing cash for the webmasters and publishers. The more versatile tools are also permitting webmasters to group web pages by URL, domain, ad type or category, that will offer them a few accurate insight on which pages, ads and domains are accomplishing best.

The last and final reason is that the advertisers have realized the features associated having their particular ads served on targeted websites. Hence increasing the opportunity that a prospective web surfer may have an fascination in their product and services. All because with the content and its regular routine maintenance. As compared with to those who are no working with Adsense in their sites, they are offered the option of having some other people do their content for them, presenting them the benefit of obtaining successful and money-generating web sites.

Adsense is the strategy for targeted content, the greater targeted your content is, a lot more target the search engines’ ads will be. You can find some web masters and publishers who definitely are focused more on their site contents and exactly how best to maintain them rather than the cash which the ads will produce for them. This is the aspect where the effectiveness is performing its best. Certainly, there was a time whenever people were not however aware of the money to be attained from advertisements. The cash earned only came into existence when the webmasters and publishers realized precisely how they can make Adsense be that generator. Exclusively, the content were being the most important factors that is certainly taken quite seriously. It still is. With all the allure of money, of course.

It is not complicated and the concept is pretty simple.

How do you send emails to supporters and others who want to hear from you?
  • An email marketing tool built with nonprofits in mind?
  • Microsoft Outlook or Gmail?
  • Carrier pigeons?
Email Service Provider

If you answered anything but the first in that list, we're here to sound the "bad idea" alarm. (We won't get into why carrier pigeons are a poor decision . . . Let's just say their delivery time isn't up to snuff and clean-up is a nightmare. And honestly, doing email marketing from your desktop email program isn’t much better.)
Many nonprofit organizations get started with email marketing by sending out e-newsletters via Outlook or Google's Gmail. But beware; there are rules, caveats amd landmines awaiting the nonprofit using Outlook or Gmail for email outreach.
While Outlook and its many cousins are fine for 1-to-1 email, they weren't designed for sending email newsletters or fundraising appeals to groups of people. To do this effectively, you need an Email Service Provider.

An Email Service Provider Built for Nonprofits

Network for Good's EmailNow was built by email marketing experts to do the tough stuff for you. It allows you to send beautiful email appeals without having to become a designer or a software engineer or someone who knows HTML or the CANSPAM regulations.

The Boundaries of Search Engine Technology:

"No smart engineer would ever build a search engine that requires websites to follow certain rules or principles in order to be ranked or indexed. Anyone with half a brain would want a system that can crawl through any architecture, parse any amount of complex or imperfect code, and still find a way to return the most relevant results, not the ones that have been 'optimized' by unlicensed search marketing experts."
Crawling and Indexing

The leading search engines many operate on the similar principles. Automated search bots crawl the web, follow links, and index content in huge databases. These execute this with stunning artificial intelligence, however current search technology is not really all-powerful. You can find numerous technical limitations which cause considerable problems in both inclusion and rankings.

Problems Crawling and Indexing:

  • Online forms: Search engines tend to be not good at completing online forms (such as a login), and hence any content contained behind them may remain hidden.
  • Duplicate pages: Websites making use of a CMS (Content Management System) usually create duplicate versions of the same page; this is a major problem for search engines seeking for completely original content.
  • Blocked in the code: Errors in a website's crawling directives (robots.txt) may possibly lead to embarrassing search engines entirely.
  • Poor link structures: If a website's link structure is not easy to understand to the search engines, they could possibly not reach all of a website's content; or, if it is crawled, the minimally-exposed content may be considered unimportant by the engine's index.
  • Non-text Content: Despite the fact that the engines are getting better at reading non-HTML text, content in rich media format is continue to difficult for search engines to parse. This involves text in Flash files, images, photos, video, audio, and plug-in content.

Search engines typically presume that the considerably more popular a site, page, or document

Search engines are generally answer machines. Whenever a person performs an online search, the search engine scours its collection of billions of documents and does two things: first, it returns only those results which are relevant or useful to the searcher's query; secondly, it ranks all those results according to the popularity of the websites providing the information. It is both relevance and popularity that the process of SEO is meant to impact.
With a search engine, relevance means a lot more than finding a page with the right words. During the early days of the web, search engines did not go much further than this simplistic step, and search results ended up of limited value. Through the years, smart engineers have created better ways to match results to searchers’ queries. Today, hundreds or thousands of factors influence relevance, and Search engines typically presume that the considerably more popular a site, page, or document, the more valuable the information it contains should be. This assumption has proven reasonably successful in terms of user satisfaction with search results.

search engines, relevance and popularity

Popularity and relevance are not determined manually. Alternatively, the engines employ mathematical equations (algorithms) to organize the wheat from the chaff (relevance), and then to rank the wheat in order of quality (popularity). These algorithms often consist of hundreds of factors. From the search marketing field, we refer to them as “ranking factors.” Moz constructed a resource specifically on this subject: Search Engine Ranking Factors.

The search engines below are all excellent choices to start with when searching for information.

Why are these considered to be "major" search engines? Because they are either wellknown or wellused. For webmasters, the major search engines are the most important places to be listed, because they can potentially generate so much traffic. For searchers, wellknown, commerciallybacked search engines generally mean more dependable results. These search engines are more likely to be wellmaintained and upgraded when necessary, to keep pace with the growing web.
Google Google was originally a Stanford University project by students Larry Page and Sergey Brin called BackRub. By 1998, the name had been changed to Google, and the project jumped off campus and became the private company Google. It remains privately held today Google has a welldeserved reputation as the top choice for those searching the web. The crawlerbased service provides both comprehensive coverage of the web along with great relevancy. It's highly recommended as a first stop in your hunt for whatever you are looking for.
Google provides the option to find more than web pages, however. Using on the top of the search box on the Google home page, you can easily seek out images from across the web, discussions that are taking place on Usenet newsgroups, locate news information or perform product searching. Using the More link provides access to humancompiled information from the Open Directory (see below), catalog searching and other services.
Google is also known for the wide range of features it offers, such as cached links that let you "resurrect" dead pages or see older versions of recently changed ones. It offers excellent spell checking, easy access to dictionary definitions, integration of stock quotes, street maps, telephone numbers and more. See Google's help page for an entire rundown on some of these features. The Google Toolbar has also won a popular following for the easy access it provides to Google and its features directly from the Internet Explorer browser.

2. Yahoo

Launched in 1994, Yahoo is the web's oldest "directory," a place where human editors organize web sites into categories. However, in October 2002, Yahoo made a giant shift to crawlerbased listings for its main results. These came from Google until February 2004. Now, Yahoo uses its own search technology.
YahooIn addition to excellent search results, you can use tabs above the search box on the Yahoo home page to seek images, Yellow Page listings or use Yahoo's excellent shopping search engine. Or visit the Yahoo Search home page, where even more specialized search options are offered.
The Yahoo Directory still survives. You'll notice "category" links below some of the sites lists in response to a keyword search. When offered, these will take you to a list of web sites that have been reviewed and approved by a human editor.
It's also possible to do a pure search of just the humancompiled Yahoo Directory, which is how the old or "classic" Yahoo used to work. To do this, search from the Yahoo Directory home page, as opposed to the regular Yahoo.com home page. Then you'll get both directory category links ("Related Directory Categories") and "Directory Results," which are the top web site matches drawn from all categories of the Yahoo Directory.

3. Ask

Ask Jeeves initially gained fame in 1998 and 1999 as being the "natural language" search engine that let you search by asking questions and responded with what seemed to be the right answer to everything.
Ask In reality, technology wasn't what made Ask Jeeves perform so well. Behind the scenes, the company at one point had about 100 editors who monitored search logs. They then went out onto the web and located what seemed to be the best sites to match the most popular queries.
In 1999, Ask acquired Direct Hit, which had developed the world's first "click popularity" search technology. Then, in 2001, Ask acquired Teoma's unique index and search relevancy technology. Teoma was based upon the clustering concept of subjectspecific popularity. Today, Ask depends on crawlerbased technology to provide results to its users. These results come from the Teoma algorithm, now known as ExpertRank.

4. AllTheWeb.com

AllTheWeb.comPowered by Yahoo, you may find AllTheWeb a lighter, more customizable and pleasant "pure search" experience than you get at Yahoo itself. The focus is on web search, but news, picture, video, MP3 and FTP search are also offered.
AllTheWeb.com was previously owned by a company called FAST and used as a showcase for that company's web search technology. That's why you sometimes may sometimes hear AllTheWeb.com also referred to as FAST or FAST Search. However, the search engine was purchased by search provider Overture (see below) in late April 2003, then later become Yahoo's property when Yahoo bought Overture. It no longer has a connection with FAST.
AOL search engine
AOL Search provides users with editorial listings that come Google's crawlerbased index. Indeed, the same search on Google and AOL Search will come up with very similar matches. So, why would you use AOL Search? Primarily because you are an AOL user. The "internal" version of AOL Search provides links to content only available within the AOL online service. In this way, you can search AOL and the entire web at the same time. The "external" version lacks these links. Why wouldn't you use AOL Search? If you like Google, many of Google's features such as "cached" pages are not offered by AOL Search.

6. HotBot

HotBot HotBot provides easy access to the web's three major crawlerbased search engines: Yahoo, Google and Teoma. Unlike a meta search engine, it cannot blend the results from all of these crawlers together. Nevertheless, it's a fast, easy way to get different web search "opinions" in one place. HotBot's "choose a search engine" interface was introduced in December 2002. However, HotBot has a long history as a search brand before this date.
HotBot debuted in May 1996, it gained a strong following among serious searchers for the quality and comprehensiveness of its crawlerbased results, which were provided by Inktomi, at the time. It also caught the attention of experienced web users and techies, especially for the unusual colors and interface it continues to sport today.
HotBot gained more notoriety when it switched over to using Direct Hit's "clickthrough" results for its main listings in 1999. Direct Hit was then one of the "hot" search engines that had recently appeared. Unfortunately, the quality of Direct Hit's results couldn't match those of another "hot" player that had debuted at the same time, Google. HotBot's popularity began to drop.
Even worse, HotBot also suffered by being owned by Lycos (now Terra Lycos). Lycos had acquired HotBot when it purchased Wired Digital in October 1998. Lycos failed to make search a priority on its flagship Lycos site as well as HotBot through much of 1999 and 2000, as it focused instead on adding "portal" features. The company refocused on search in late 2001, making significant improvements to the Lycos site and, as noted, reworked the HotBot site at the end of 2002.

7. AltaVista

AltaVista
AltaVista opened in December 1995 and for several years was the "Google" of its day, in terms of providing relevant results and having a loyal group of users that loved the service. Sadly, an attempt to turn AltaVista into a portal site in 1998 saw the company lose track of the importance of search. Over time, relevancy dropped, as did the freshness of AltaVista's listings and the crawler's coverage of the web.
Today, AltaVista is once again focused on search. Results come from Yahoo, and tabs above the search box let you go beyond web search to find images, MP3/Audio, Video, human category listings and news results. If you want a lighterfeel than Yahoo but to still have Yahoo's results, AltaVista is worth considering.
AltaVista was originally owned by Digital, then taken over by Compaq, when that company purchased Digital in 1998. AltaVista was later spun off into a private company, controlled by CMGI. Overture purchasing the search engine in April 2003, then it later became part of Yahoo when Yahoo bought Overture.

8. Live Search

Live SearchLive Search (formerly Windows Live Search) is the name of Microsoft's web search engine, successor to MSN Search, designed to compete with the industry leaders Google and Yahoo. The search engine offers some innovative features, such as the ability to view additional search results on the same web page (instead of needing to click through to subsequent search result pages) and the ability to adjust the amount of information displayed for each searchresult (i.e. just the title, a short summary, or a longer summary). It also allows the user to save searches and see them updated automatically on Live.com.
The service was previously powered by LookSmart results and gained top marks for having its own team of editors that monitored the most popular searches being performed to handpick sites believed to be the most relevant. The system worked well.

9. LookSmart

LookSmartLookSmart is primarily a humancompiled directory of web sites. It gathers its listings in two ways. Commercial sites pay to be listed in its commercial categories, making the service very much like an electronic "Yellow Pages." However, volunteer editors at the LookSmartowned Zeal directory also catalog sites into noncommercial categories for free. Though Zeal is a separate web site, its listings are integrated into LookSmart's results.
LookSmart launched independently in October 1996, was backed by Reader's Digest for about a year, and then company executives bought back control of the service. LookSmart also bought the WiseNut crawlerbased search engine in April 2002. WiseNut's are offered through the LookSmart via its Web tab above the search box. Unlike its competitors, the WiseNut crawler has often been out of date, sometimes for months at a time.
Finally, the real gem at LookSmart can be found via its Articles tab. That provides access to content from thousands of periodicals.

10. Lycos

Lycos
Lycos is one of the oldest search engines on the web, launched in 1994. It ceased crawling the web for its own listings in April 1999 and instead provides access to humanpowered results from LookSmart for popular queries and crawlerbased results from Yahoo for others.
"Fast Forward" lets you see search results in one side of your screen and the actual pages listed in another. Relevant categories of humancompiled information from the Open Directory appear at the bottom of the search results page.
Lycos is owned by Terra Lycos, a company formed with Lycos and Terra Networks merged in October 2000. Terra Lycos also owns the HotBot search engine described above.

11. Open Directory

 Open Directory
The Open Directory uses volunteer editors to catalog the web. Formerly known as NewHoo, it was launched in June 1998. It was acquired by AOL Time Warnerowned Netscape in November 1998, and the company pledged that anyone would be able to use information from the directory through an open license arrangement.
While you can search at the Open Directory site itself, this is not recommended. The site has no "backup" results that kick in should there not be a match in the humancompiled database. In addition, the ranking of sites during keyword searching is poor, while alphabetical ordering is used when you choose to "browse" categories by topic.
Instead, to scan the valuable information compiled by the Open Directory, consider using the version offered by Google, the Google Directory. Here, keyword searching uses Google's refined relevancy algorithms and makes use of link analysis to better propel good pages from the human database to the top. In addition, when viewing sites by category, they will be listed in PageRank order, which means the most popular sites based on analyzing links from across the web will be listed first.
